R22 is a commonly used refrigerant that has been used in the HVAC system manufactured before 2010. R22 is considered an ozone-depleting substance and therefore regulated by the EPA. Per the EPA, as of Jan 1, 2020, the US will stop manufacturing R22 and prohibit the installation of new appliances that require the use of R22.
Besides, EPA laws limit importing R22 into the US. This EPA law went into effect back in 2004 and had been guiding equipment manufacturers and consumers on the phase-out plan.
For homeowners with HVAC systems that use R22, it will cost more to add refrigerant as supplies deplete after Jan 1, 2020. Only reclaimed R22 and previously produced quantities will be allowed for use.
The replacement refrigerant is ozone friendly R410A, and this refrigerant should be used on all HVAC equipment manufactured after 2010, per EPA guidelines.
