Are you planning to go on a vacation, but worried about your home safety? Then you must educate yourself about your area ‘Police House Watch’ program. The program is designed to provide peace of mind to residents while they are away from home on a vacation for an extended period of time and have no one to look after their house such as pet sitter, someone to water plants or checking the residence.
In case you have someone watching your house, have them contact the Police Department in the event it looks like something is “out of place” or “disturbed.”
Members of the Police Department will physically check each registered house during a resident’s absence. Information provided by the resident makes it possible to contact them, or their designated key holder, in the event that the residence may need attention.
The House Watch Program provides an overall increase in police presence around homes during a resident’s time away. The house watch program excludes apartments and condominiums.
Other than signing up in the ‘Police House Watch Program’, follow these steps as well to safeguard your property:
- Stop newspaper and mail delivery.
- Leave shades/blinds in normal positions.
- Use random timers on your indoor lights & TV.
- Leave a key with a trusted neighbor in case of emergency
- Lock all windows and doors.
- Don’t put your garbage cans out.
- Arrange to have the lawn mowed/ snow plowed.
- Keep jewelry and other valuables in places other than the master bedroom (this is the first place a burglar looks).
