IS YOUR STATE ISSUED DRIVER LICENSE REAL ID COMPLIANT?

The US Congress passed legislation call REAL ID ACT in 2005 that requires states to implement uniform standards for the issuance and production of state-issues driver licenses and identification cards. Beginning October 1, 2020, REAL ID-compliant cards will be accepted as a form of identification to access federal facilities or at airports for domestic travel.

Texas began issuing REAL ID-compliant driver licenses and identification cards from October 10, 2016, marked with a gold star. Your current id-card with a star or no star is valid until the date of expiry within the state for banking, voting, etc. After October 1, 2020, to be accepted for federal purposes, you will need the id-card with a star. If you travel frequently and use your driver’s license at airports, then you will need to carry your passport after October 1, 2020, or get your state-issued driver license updated.
